Connecting with the culture
Cambodia 2 Comments »We were truly blessed last week to attend an engagement party /celebration. It was with our landlord’s family (who live behind us ). It was their son-in-law’s sister. We were a bit late as it started at 7:30 in the morning on Saturday. We were not sure what to expect, but were surprised to see that it was a formal gathering, with many decorated tables and chairs. Over 45 people attended. As the foreigners, we were invited to sit and watch the engagement ceremony with 15 others, in their family room. This consisted of the fathers of the engaged couple conversing with speeches along with plenty of laughing. The engaged man had to sit and partake with many smiles and nodding. After this we were placed with a group of young men to eat. They were friends of the couple and spoke some English. All of the guys said that they have girlfriends except the chap next to us whose girlfriend had just left to live with family in the USA. It is very nice to see a respect for family and conservative values in Cambodia. America can probably re-discover many values that we have lost, from this developing country.
